After each section of a track day recently when you come back to pit lane, you have to use the clutch to negotiate other riders etc my bike just cuts out. the bike starts, idles, and runs fine, its this anoying cut out at low speed which you will know when it happens you cant let the clutch out cos the back wheel just locks, and you cant restart untill you find neutral.

its as if i have fuel starvation but i would have starvation all the time and the bike ran perfect, no glitches.

ive lifted the tank to check if any pipes are trapped or nipped but all look fine. the track temperatures were high, dont know if this had anything to do with it ?? Confused

any ideas of why or where to look next ?? jools

How olds the bike?  Pre 2004 shape or post?

Post 2004 have an idle stepper motor set up and you may have another issue causing the stalling, pre 2004 is more than likely just a case of getting the CO set and the throttle bodies balanced.

Where in the world are you, reason I ask is that the best man for the job is Griff in Tamworth?

If you can't get to Griff then at least give him a buzz and pick his brains, he's a top bloke that will help you fix this stalling issue.

hi cheers for the info. the bike is an 04 model, excuse my ignorance but what is an idle stepper motor set up ?

ive spoke to griff before and yes he,s a top bloke, but unfortunately im about 200mls north from tamworth., and in this part of the world we are poorly served  with anything to do with bikes, so i try and do most stuff myself. but sometimes sh*t like this happens  and you really need a bloke like griff on your door step.

im purely guessing it maybe a faulty air pressure sensor, but no errors have come up on the dash, and how would you know if it was faulty ? the only way i know would be to replace it and see if the problem dissapeared. if it didnt doing that way could turn out  v expensive given the cost of aprilia parts.

best solution at the mo me thinks is to  give griff a buzz sometime next week, but in the meantime if anyone has any views i,ll be glad to hear them.

cheers jools

Hi Jools
It does sound like an idle stepper motor problem, the stepper motor is an electrical motor that is controlled by the bikes injection ecu (computer) the ecu commands the motor to extend or retract its plunger this opens or closes an air bleed circuit within the airbox and gives you higher or lower revs at idle/slow speeds, if the plunger becomes fouled/dirty this will interupt the air bleed circuit and cause the bike to cut out, you will find the idle stepper motor on the underside of the air box on the right at the rear (looks like a black bobbin) it is secured by two screws, remove the screws and take out the stepper motor you will see that it is a motor with a plunger and domed tip, examine the plunger tip and remove any deposits of oil, sludge, carbon, or dirt so that it is thoroughly cleaned, now clean out the recess where the plunger goes up into the airbox refit stepper motor and road test.
Please note that cleaning the plunger only addresses the mechanical function of the stepper motor and checking the electrical function is a little more involved.  Smile

great forum guys keep up the good work  Star

This is good stuff, going to check mine now as its never been cleaned out in 38K miles!

Also Jools, if its not this and you suspect the MAPSs, I have a spare I can send to you so you can swap that out and try it.  As long as I get it back!!

update, i think ive found the problem.  although  the min regulation engine and the min regulation valve or the black thing under the airbox on the right   were almost spotlessly clean the plunger was totally seized.
im almost certain its this but i wont know for 100% until i change it for a new one..
the problem now is the time of the year
if the maindealers havent got one in stock, the whole of italy closes for a month august 1st, then its down to taking a chance on fleabay.  fingers crossed..  Thumbs Up   jools

It might be that you have previously set the bike up against this 'seized' componant and now all you need to do is get it set up again with the new one??

Not sure, however if it is part of the idle running system, by putting in a new part that might be set slightly differently to the old one, then I would probably get it done.

Can anyone offer more info on this?

Are you absolutly sure that all the hoses, including the ones that go to the front, are not leaking.  I have a wild thought that the slipper clutch being a diafram type, that uses a vacuum to operate could leak air??????????

Stabs in the dark, but everything related to maintaining pressures in the throttle bodies has to be considered as a 'small' leak can have big effects to idling pressures...not 'on the gas' pressures, which would overcome small leaks anyway.

You say after having a good thrash on a track, you get this problem, so this could be related to increased heat, which could be affecting quite a lot of things...sealing of TBs to manifold, pipes, could be fuel pressure related, are both hoses good?  Hoses split off to 2 1 way valves, one to the slipper, one to the frapper.....the slipper or the frapper could be leaking??

Anyways food for thought!

its got me beat at the mo this one, because it is definately better with the new min engine and min valve fitted, but the problem is still there. it still cuts out but not all the time;; as it did before ,all the hoses and conections are 100%. as far as im aware the min engine and min valve help regulate the tick over.

ive not set up the bike at all, its  ran map 2, sp akrapovics, which were fitted from new 6yrs ago;; last year i fitted  an evo open air filter, spark plugs are a perfect colour so fueling is pretty good, yes i probably would be better off going down the power commander route but up until now the bike has ran perfect..
also another problem happened today,   dont know if its connected ??? the bike was thrashed for about 25 mins.   the bike ran on tickover but you could tell it was hunting. i stopped for about 15mins.. started the bike,, set off and the bike went into limp mode where the revs surge intermitantly to 6k and the red triangle appears;; i turned the engine off and restarted straight away and the problem was gone Confused
im grasping at straws but i was thinking a loose conection on the ecu ?? ecu overheating ?? not sure??
the original tick over problem started after a session on the track but it now seems to be there even when the bike is cold, but not all the time;;there just doesnt seem to be any continuaty in the problem which is confusing me.
if only griff was local, im about a 4hr drive from tammworth, but if i cant get it sorted my end then i,ll have to make that trip.  jools

Found the problem. it was a faulty oil pressure sensor that was shutting part of the ecu down, only found out when i turned the bike on and the oil sign wouldnt go out, i replaced with a new oil pressure switch and the idle problem has dissapeared. hey presto !!! jools
