hi kev, are you sitting down mate £170 no limits, it might as well be outer limits, but its my local and it still works out cheaper for me than cadwell, oulton etc time i add on juice and digs. i see your going down the in line four route, croft suits that type of bike.. i missed cadwell with the forum trackday as i had to go for an opp on my wrist , all do to with gravity and ending in tears as it always does !!! although i did do cadwell a few weeks ago in a monsoon, i reccon i could of used a jet ski. it would of been faster. i will probably go to cadwell again some time this year. if you dont fancy croft i might meet up with you at cadwell sometime. ?? Should really sell with the mods etc youve got on there,, if you could afford to wait you get a lot more if you broke the old girl , but thats a real shame to do to a well sorted bike. yep , ive got my eye on a rsv4, but im going to wait about another couple of years when they come more affordable. last year at donnington i followed one around for a couple of sessions. v nice !! on the third session i passed it on the old hairpin but as soon as the track opened up it went passed me as though i was in reverse. i then nearly killed myself trying to catch it up for the next three laps, i passed it again going down craner and held on until the straight before the chicane, where it passed me again, by that time i was i was mentally knacked !! i caught the rsv4 owner in the pits and he told me that he had just traded a 07 factory in for it. he said that it handled just like the factory but with bags more power everywhere. he said that the only fault with the bike was that the gearing was wrong for the track, and at the time there was no aftermarket sprockets available. should of changed by now me thinks. if you dont make it to croft i,ll catch up with you on some track no doubt. take it easy. jools

Ok Kev, thats my next bike like you said it looks as if its an easy bike to go fast on, should of had one at croft. i was awful at croft on friday, couldnt put my finger on what i was doing wrong so im going to get some coaching next time out. body position wrong, missing apexes, you name it i was doing it; had no moments just felt really slow. mind you there were some really fast blokes there on proper 200bhp superbikes which i was comparing myself to. i was that bad i was blaming the bike, but it was me !! with there only being 4 trackdays at croft a lot of the places are taken with riders like chris burns and the like., practicing for the bsb late in the year. some of the angles and speed they were going round were round were awsome. when you see the level they are at it shows how crap i am in comparison. i,ll keep on trying what else can you do ?? im next out at croft again in june we,ll see how it goes ?? jools |

How did the trackday at Croft go? I didn't see or hear many other RSV's there.
I'm trying to find a decent suspension set up for my '03' RSVR......had lots of conflicting advice, but if anyone has a tried and tested set up I'd be happy to listen.
Cheers

Great weather for a change, great bike, with a great sh**y rider !!
i was in the fast group on a beaten up black/white factory *10, there was also an 03 edwards rep. i didnt notiice any other apes in the other groups, but then again i was too buisy beating myself up after the sessions. i was in the first garage as you come into pitlane from the track. which group were you in and did you have a gud 1 ??
croft was even more bumpy than usual and the set up i had was no good. like you ive had conflicting advice on a set up, so i have played around to no great affect. i was going to get griff to set my bike up, but he has not ventured this far north yet. probably something to do with the lack of o2 up here

Weather was perfect which was a surprise. Brought some 'wets' just in case but obviously left in the van for the day.
I managed to sneak a late entry into the intermediate group which i was surprised at. I've left the hero fast group behind because due to a lack of talent my ego couldn't take that much of a bruising! There were some extremely fast guys this time and Richard 'Mini' Cooper just amazed me with how fast a bike can go around Croft.
I've just bought an RSVR and it was my first time out on it. I've a 2000 RSV which handles far better so I'm going to try making some changes recommended by 'Sport Rider' magazine. If you haven't checked it out it's worth a look at online. I used it's settings for the RSV and they worked pretty well....... but if you've tried something that has worked for you I'd be interested to give it a go.
I'll be there on the hottrax dates in June and July so I'll come and find you for a chat. I'll be there with a van marked either AS Trading or AS Performance (mates van) Look out for a blue/yellow RSVR probably going backwards!!
Look forward to catching up. Graeme

hi graeme, yes im at croft june july and august so with a bit of luck i,ll probably catch you at some point. like you said they were some extremely fast lads out there. with croft running only 4 trackdays what is happening is that the spaces are just getting grabbed up so you will find a lot of fast riders in both the intermediate and slow groups.
i dont know if you noticed but in the fast group there was a group of about five who were v fast and stuck together for all the sections, they were all riding like their arses were on fire all day. well i was talking to mark who owns nolimits and apparently the group consisted of max biaggi x manager and his friends. looked like a bit of max magic has rubbed off.
thats what i need, anyone got a contact number for max ?? shy bairns dont get nout do they??
all being well i,ll see you at croft. jools Edited by jools - 05 Jun 2010 at 7:58am |

I did see the guys you've mentioned...it was like watching a train going round! The one session I watched where Richard Cooper went out after them I couldn't believe how fast he was. He passed them all on the run from Hawthorn to Tower...next lap around he was at Tower as they were entering Hawthorn....amazing corner speed he was carrying but the straight line pull (of I think his BMW) was tremendous!
Have had a good check of the suspension on the mille. The guy I bought it from said it had been properly set up by Ktech and Mick Grant. After checking the base settings Aprilia give in their workshop manual the real settings couldn't have been further away. It was like everything had been set up from the wrong end of the range.... instead of adjusting everything from hard to soft, they've been set up with the same clicks from soft to hard. Hope I've understood things right because you'll have a good laugh at Croft watching me bounce my way around if I've dropped a clanger.
Will make a point of finding you at the trackday....I'm sure I can show you how an RSV can 50p and wobble around Croft :-) Graeme

if youre doing 50p im probably doing 20p,s in fact for once ive decided im going to spend most of the day with an instructor and see where im going wrong. im also going to set my suspension a little softer this time to cope with all those ripples and bumps, i dont think crofts been so bad , it must be all the truck and tractor racing

I'm not sure who you know with Hottrax as an instructor, but a friend of ours (Keith Pringle) should be there on the day as an instructor. If you're a fan of road racing you should know Keith....he's a very successful rider (check out Olivers Mount website) and is an absolute top bloke. He also holds, or did hold, the lap record around Croft on a V-twin (RSVR). I'm going to grab him this time for a bit of instruction.... should scare the living daylights out of me!!!
I'm going to suggest some steamroller racing for the rest of the season....it might help to level some of the bumps out I think..... and can you imagine the excitement?

no one in particular graeme, but your friend sounds like he,s the man; especially as he is familiar with apes. i,ll seek him out.
Steamroller racing !!! what a great idea thats just what the doctor ordered, on a nice hot summers day. the only downside is when they start pulling wheelies after the hairpin down the straight

Hi jools....couldn't find you at Croft??
Well that day ended my biking career......had a fantastic day and the new bike with the revised suspension settings was going like a dream! All was well until the cool down lap after the last session..... eased off the throttle to enter the Esses and my throttle jammed open. No warning and a split second of panic saw me go off track into the in field. Can't remember much after that other than ambulance, extreme pain, hospital, scanners and then I properly woke up. Have broken my back in four places, bruised my lungs...torn more muscle and ligament than I knew I had and damaged my left eye. Sure I'll repair in time !!
On a brigter note.....how did your day go? Did you have any success with the bike?
Graeme

OH NO !! sh*t graeme, was that you ?? didnt see it happen but i saw a commotion where i was watching from the complex and it didnt look good, it would be on one of the fastest parts of the track with no proper run off wouldnt it. What is it with SODS LAW ??? i didnt realise it was you and you were injured that bad, im not one for getting off on others mishaps like rubbernecking, there was a lengthy delay so i started to pack up missed all the afters. i really hope your on the mend mate , will probably take a while especially with ligaments damage .
hey it puts my troubles into context how can i start to complain about my performance ??
i messed about with my suspension all day and rather going softer to deal with the bumps i ended up going harder on the front as i was far too soft initially, got it pretty much sorted except i was leaving huge black lines especially on the exit of the chicane and the 2nd part of the complex. only realised that i was doing this when i nearly high sided and had a quick look back and saw what i was leaving.Itas turn it down a notch time !!
i now need to turn it a bit softer at the back i think. i tried to get keith for some tuition but he was buisy all day, popular lad, i,ll try and grab him if he is at croft in a fortnights time.
i tried to find you/your bike at dinner time but could i hell find you. all i could find was ayellow red haga edwards rep in the 5th garage from the bottom, where were you ?? i was in the 3rd garage from the top . i watch you on your session and you seem to be going well, and the bike didnt sound like an ape, it had a slighty different tone, possible engine work ??
Might sound stupid cos i dont know how you are at the mo but if you manage to get to croft at the end of july or august the offers still there come and seek me out. usually towards the top end of the garages near where thet park the porsches.
Let me know how your doing and i hope your recovery going as it should. Take care. Jools

Yeah that was me in the long grass. It took me over a week to suss out what happened but I played a video of a couple of laps over and over again and it slotted into place. I couldn't work out why if only my throttle had stuck had I gone off.... it came back to me on after watching the video. The lad in front of me on a red fireblade decided to slow down and sit up going into the esses....I was still on throttle and tried to avoid running into the back of him. The throttle stuck and I veered off track. I can't remember a thing after that until I woke up in the long grass. I know the lad really well and he must have been parked just outside of your garage (large camper with an awning) I haven't told him what happened as it wasn't intentional but feel I will one day just to educate him for the future.
It was the look on everyones face in hospital that made me realise how bad I was. My left eye was very badly swollen and had apparently come out due to the impact. It had gone back in but I suffered massive swelling behind my eye which pushed it forward. I looked like a bloody alien for a couple of weeks! Things are on the mend slowly but I'll have to decide whether I'll be fit enough to ride again in the coming months.
I looked in all the garages for you but only found the red/yellow Aprilia. My bike was going great on the day and the suspension changes had transformed the handling. I was taking it relatively easy during the day trying to get used to the bike and still found it very easy to go around the outside of most things at Sunny and Hawthorn. Pity the bike took such a hammering when I came off....will need to find the bits to repair. It's got some decent spec so I intend to rebuild it rather than break it up.
If I make it down to Croft next week I'll find you... I'll also have a word with Keith to take you out if you want? If I don't make it look for a van with A.S Trading (with bike/car decals) and ask for Alan (Alan Stockton Trading). Alan sponsors Keith and I'm sure he'll have a word for you. I'll let Alan know you might speak to him. He rides a black/white GRSR750 and will be in the intermediate group.
Hope to catch up with you there (I haven't tried driving with the body brace fitted yet!!), but let me know how you get on if I don't Graeme

Hi mate,im really glad to hear your on the mend, and at least considering getting back into the groove. Dont force it though and only you,ll know when the time is right. when you said your throttle stuck open i thought it strange as survival mode normally kicks in, brake clutch, gears kill switch anything to scrub speed off. but what youve described makes much more sense, if you have to make a sudden avasive action then its a suck it and see situation and things are out of your control. a lad who was about about 50m behind you said you just went straight ahead at the esses, but i guess there was no way he could see the blade in front of you being a pratt. personally thats the only thing with the the groups in track days is that there are riders who shouldnt be in certain groups given their ablity and i think more importantly experience.its provado and the truth is that no one has anything to prove !! we all can ride slow on track days and there is always someone faster but there is a safe way to do it. Slowing up there is suicdal, the fastest part of the track with over half the track to go. normally i dont ease off till the begining of the complex where you can have a quick look around as its the slowest part of the track..
i,ll try and catch keith again, especially when im normally the first at the track.
if you dont make it to croft no worries i,ll catch up with sometime, as long as youre on the mend, the only thing now for you is the bordom, but luckily for you there plenty of bike racing on the box at this time of the year. take it easy. jools

It's been a huge baptism of fire knowing I can crash. I've had a few slips on track before but nothing major. I've slowed down a lot in the last few years and gone from the fast group to the relative easy pace of the intermediates because I felt I was pushing it too hard (can't afford any time off work due to accidents etc).....but what you say makes total sense. Some people are fast enough to stay in group but have no idea about track safety. All I remember is a feeling of total confusion....why has he slowed down so much....why has he gone out wide......throttle stuck....brake.....what the f**k is going on.... paramedic looking over me. A really surreal experience! I think the throttle sticking was only adding to the confusion....if it has been only that I wouldn't have minded...but when a guy rides like a pillock I had no chance. Maybe someone with more talent would have coped better but who knows. It was certainly a learning experience and an education that you shouldn't trust anyone!
I wasn't aware anyone was behind at the time....I'm just glad they didn't get caught up in it too.
If I don't make it down on Friday let me know how you get on. I would like to catch up sometime and you can give me some riding tips. Just avoid the obvious one like.....''don't ride like a melon and crash!!''
Catch up soon Graeme

HEY GRAEME, THE AMOUNT OF CRASHES IVE HADIN THE PAST 12 MONTHS IM IN NO POSITION TO GIVE TIPS. MY LAST TWO HAVE BEEN HUGE ONES. BOTH AT CROFT.BUT NOWAY AS SERIOUS AS YOUR EXCURSION;; ..THANK GOD YOUVE COME OUT THE OTHER SIDE..
LAST JULY I GOT A FALSE NUETRAL AS I BANGED DOWN A GEAR FOR THE ESSES, 120MPH NO DRIVE AND I WAS SOON GRASS TRACKING ON THE RIGHTSIDE OFF THE TRACK. I THOUGHT I,DE SAVED IT UNTIL I HIT A LARGE TRACTOR DIVIT . CAME OUT RELATIVELY UNSCAVED EXCEPT FOR CONCUSION, A SMASH NEW ARAI HELMET , BENT FORKS, SMASHED CLIP ONS AND NO BODY WORK LEFT AT ALL.
THEN 4 WEEKS LATER AUGUST AT CROFT I WAS GETTING FASTER AND FASTER UNTIL I RAN OUT OF TALENT ON SUNNY OUT. I LOST THE FRONT DUE TO TOO MUCH LEAN ANGLE TYRING TO AVOID TWO BIKES BOTH BRAKING ON THE WAY OUT OF SUNNY OUT ...........THE RESULT WAS A GROUND DOWN BONE ON MY ELBOW, A BROKEN WRIST, A DISLOCATED SHOULDER, LIGAMENT DAMAGE TO MY GROIN AND TO CAP IT OFF I NOW HAVE TO GO FOR AN OPP FOR A TRAPPED ULNA NERVE AND NERVE REPAIR TO MY WRIST
THE JOYS OF THE TRACK
THE WAY I SEE IT, IS THAT EVERYTHING HAS A SILVER LINING IN THERE SOMEWHERE ??? COULD OF HAPPENED ON THE ROAD, COULD OF BEEN A LOT WORSE I GUESS
NOW IM TRYING TO EXORCISE THE DEMONS AND TRYING TO COPE WITH EMOTIONAL SABUTAGE.
TIME WILL TELL ?? TAKE IT EASY. JOOLS
I,LL TRY

Jesus....sounds like you've had more fun than me!!
How are the track days going to date....are you getting the hang of the suspension set up yet?
What year is your RSV?....only reason I'm asking is that I'm trying to decide whether to break my bike or repair it. It's got rakes of decent bits on it but I'm not sure whether to repair it and sell or break it up. With your experience of Aprilia's...what do you think???
Let me know how you get on with the trackdays and when you're next at Croft....I'll call down and find you next time.
Graeme
